COPY. Hotel Metropole Cannes 16/2/24 CJ. I left R.{Sir Henry Royce} at Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence yesterday having stayed the night at Bonnes. We discussed many things, incidentally he told me he had instructed the high-speed Servo to be dropped. He drove the EAC car about 20 miles and expressed his entire agreement with all my criticisms. This car is now at Nice where the gearbox is being taken down to deal with the reverse-pinion which had become seized on its spindle. R.{Sir Henry Royce} remarked that Derby had made this part too good a fit. I made some interesting running comparisons between the EAC car and the yellow Marseilles car 28 PK when running from Cannes to Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence. The gear ratios are similar and also the weights are much the same as loaded. The 40/50 held me wonderfully well all the way up the steep side of the Esterel in spite of the EAC 4-wheel brakes. The relative all accelerations from 15 m.p.h. were much as the same as with Hanbury's Riviera car, that is:- the EAC easily forged ahead. Yesterday I took Mr. Griffiths and family a very strenuous demonstration run on 28 PK. (Marseilles car): this car is very good in spite of its 15-tooth axle which is wrong for this country. The EAC car will be ready to run on Tuesday evening again and it will then be kept continuously at it, with a view to engine experience, decarbonizing etc., so far it has given no trouble at all.
