Lapping. ---------- In connection with service work Btn. sends some notes on successful lapping operations which may be useful:- (1) Tappet adjusting screw and valve rockers. Now being lapped on the spherical seatings with fine abrasive. Considerable improvement in valve gear silence. I have already referred to this. (2) Slipper flywheels. Friction faces on wheels now being lapped (Bethel Player). Hubs ground and polished to remove machine marks. Considerable improvement in valve gear. (3) Front axle. Bottom face of pivot pin, bronze thrust washer and cover plate all being lapped. Reduced friction on the testing rig from 10 to 8 lbs. Does not seem to have any bad effect on steering nor to require increased load on cross steering tube. (4) Ball pads on side steering tube. C.H.N.S. (5) Bronze valve guides. A very nice finish with flowers of sulphur on an aluminium lap. (6) Servos. Halos being ground dry and disc-lapped. (7) Cylinders. By using lime on a rag buff in the honing machine, we are now getting a super-mirror finish on cylinder bores. The surface resembles an engine that has run several thousand miles. Oy. | ||
