We have been investigating the failure of a C.A.V. vibrator regulator which was reported faulty from the Test Dept., the regulator number was No.21633. We find that the cause of the failure was due to the regulator being incorrectly connected up during the wiring of the chassis, the cables marked I and E respectively becoming interchanged on the terminals. This resulted in the moving contact being connected to "earth" so that when operating on the second stage, during which this contact vibrates on the fixed positive contact the dynamo was intermittently short circuited instead of the field winding only being short circuited. This of course would seriously damage the contact points which have now apparently become welded together thus permanently short circuiting the dynamo. We understand that fitting a new regulator has cured the trouble. We should consider it a good plan for some one also to inspect the wiring connections on the chassis in the erecting bay before the chassis is delivered to the Test Dept., if this is not already being done.
