X 5660 The manual full and half charge switch, now again under consideration as a result of experiences on cars of other makes, can be arranged either as an independent charge reducing switch inserting resistance in the field winding circuit or as a switch interconnected with the headlamp switch. The former case involves less complication of the present system than the latter. There are other apparent advantages and disadvantages of the two schemes. If, for instance, the switch is interconnected with the head lamps, it would be possible to set the generator to a higher output with the same degree of safety than if it were independent. A disadvantage of a high dynamo output subject only to manual reduction either by inserting resistance or as referred to below, is that the output is very sensitive to exact control brush position and bedding at the high output end, and so might be appreciably greater at one time than another. The suggestion of using two control brushes relatively staggered with a two way switch for altering the output of the dynamo is attractive.
