The car as many faults which require attention. The silenced Carburetter requires alteration to the air valves ports to get better metering, we reported yesterday upon this. The diaphram at the bottom of the air valve should be lifted up untill the bottom edge is level with the bottom flute of the H.S. Throat. The triangular air ports require opening out approx. .0625" at the base of the triangle to give more air when the ports are opened. We can after these alterations get correct metering all the way up the scale of the throttle [strikethrough]opening[/strikethrough], the engine falling away either side of the normal control mixture.

BRAKES

The front brakes are doing too much work, apart from tests on the road examination shows that the shoes are powdering up excessively a sure indication of too much braking, they squeak. The rear brakes squeak giving out a high pitched note. The hand brake also squeaks. The rear brake ropes should not be left slack, very bad clanking is the result. The rear shoes of the brakes squeak internally, the squeak is caused by the guides holding the shoes.

PROPELLER SHAFT.

This is still fouling the rear cross member on maximum bump. We have fitted packings .312" under the buffers. We believe it is due to the rear springsbeing to flexible allowing the axle to wind upwards? [handwritten: ?]

ENGINE.

We have got the test dept. complaint of oil draining out of the carburetter whilst standing. It is not the result of the air pump this time, but the air breather pipe from the crankcase into the new carburetter. If you take the pipe off, oil is splashed out in quantities, a better baffle is required in the crankcase.

HOT SPOT.

We are not getting sufficient heat to this. When running normally (not high speed) the hot spot is considerably cooler than the cylinders or water temp. The silencer for this exhaust ejects a quantity of condensed vapour, a pool of water is left on the ground after running light in the garage. There is no drain hole in the silencer, it requires one. The insufficient heat is causing the Carburetter to load up (missfires on picking up after slow running test) also it is the cause of exhaust explosions on the overrun.

ENGINE.

We have got a definate camshaft squawk, I am going to try Castrol Oil in the engine because I did not hear it untill we used Shell oil.

VALVES.

The valves have been set with .006" clearance when cold . With
