REC'D WORKS 26 OCT 1927

25th. October 1927.

BY10/G.25.10.27.

Messrs. Thos. Firth & Sons Ltd.,
Norfolk Works,
Sheffield.

Dear Sirs,

(for the attention of Mr. Wortley Fawcett).

I am enclosing herewith blueprint A.6546 representing a 1100 lb. front spring as produced by our American Associates, and spring specification also No. A8546.

We propose to place an order for two pairs of springs produced to this drawing with the exception that the drilled eyes will be our standard holes, and the clips will be of the American type which we will supply in time for you to fit same to the springs after they are produced.

The reason why we are fitting the American clip is that we wish to keep the springs precisely the same as those made in America, and therefore keep the comparison of the two springs accurate in every respect. We do not propose to revert from our present type clip to the American type, but since the American type is narrower than ours it would mean modifying the proportions of the spring which again would re-act upon spring deflection and finally upon spring performance.

The material from which we wish the springs to be made is your Silico Manganese steel, which is proposed for use in the near future.

We have already handed to your Mr. Wolstenholme on Thursday of last week a set of blueprints covering the method by which the particular design of spring under discussion has been arrived at, so that in the event of us wanting to adopt this type of spring your Mr. Stanfield will be thoroughly acquainted with the method of calculating and correcting same, as the information submitted covers
