Coverley - Production Engineer}/SS.{S. Smith}2/MJ.16.11.36. PHANTOM 111. COMBINED CRANKCASE CYLINDER BLOCK. In order to facilitate the production of cylinder liners, we shall be glad if you will arrange to introduce a small diameter rubber at the top joint in a similar manner to that shown on attached sketch. The addition of such a rubber which has been successfully tried out on Merlin F.{Mr Friese} engines will enable the liner to be given .0005 to .001 clearance on the top spigot and provide more suitable production limits apart from being an additional safeguard against the possibility of water leaks, it would also eliminate the necessity of selective grinding, as is now the Works practice, due to the 'Size & Size' fit called for, which apart from being a costly method causes considerable delay in output.
