Contd. -5- Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL/T23.8.26. opening up and again perhaps just after shutting the throttle. At present we know no means of preventing this. Our next step in this direction is to see to what extent the governor tends to keep the throttle away from this optimum value and what would be required of the governor to appreciably reduce the trouble. SUMMARY:- Continuous explosions in the silencer can be prevented by the following means :- 1. By admitting air to the induction pipe, but we have been unable to make this work automatically by means of a spring loaded suction valve because the depression in the induction pipe under low speed conditions is higher than obtained in some cases when silencer explosions occur. 2. By richening the mixture to give steady firing in the cylinder. 3. It is not necessary for the throttle to be entirely shut for all motoring speeds but the lower the speed the more the throttle has to be closed to prevent explosions. For low speeds it is necessary to shut shut throttle. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/ACL. | ||
