Messrs Rolls Royce Ltd.,
DERBY.

For the attention of Mr. Hardy (Belper).

Dear Mr. Hardy,

This is to confirm my 'phone conversation with you to-day in connection with the testing of 6.50/16 Avon Silent Tyres.
(handwritten insertion: on dyno drums. AH.)

We have made some attempt to distinguish the degree of noise produced by our tyres of different designs, for example, the present four bar Standard pattern and the five bar Special Speed pattern. These tyres are run with slip angle of approximately five degrees, but we find it difficult to reach a definite opinion as to the relative noise values.

We have, however, come to certain definite conclusions with regard to pattern design and also tread compounds, and we are at present making a new mould embodying our ideas so far as tread pattern is concerned. This is the mould to which we referred in our letter to Mr. Robotham of the 16th September, 1941. We already have the castings for this mould and it is now in the process of being machined. We, therefore, should have delivery of it in about five or six weeks time. We shall then make tyres with different tread compounds and by test see if we have made any improvement on the "squeal" problem.

When we visted you in September you had not been able to do any tests on the various tyres which we had sent you and to which we referred in our letter of the 16th September. You expressed the opinion at that time that you might be able to find time to carry out these tests. It would be of considerable help to us if this could be done and we should be obliged if you could let us know if this is still possible.

Yours faithfully,
THE AVON INDIA RUBBER CO., LTD.,
J.{Mr Johnson W.M.} Dickson,
Tyre Design Department.
