GEARBOX CONTROL.

R.{Sir Henry Royce} has suggested that high pressure oil
should be used for the control of the proposed epicyclic gear
in order that the time of operation may be kept down, and we
now wish to know whether a gear type pump will do.

Would you kindly make a test to determine
the volumetric efficiency of say an engine gear pump at 100,
200, and 300 lbs. per sq. in., with engine oil at whatever
temperature is thought to be the maximum that gearbox oil will
attain.

The pump should have the maximum clear-
ances given by the manufacturing limits, and should also have
extra clearance to represent wear if it is thought that
appreciable wear takes place in these pumps.

A 20/25HP. size of pump should be suffi-
ciently large.
