Re: Oil Flow Tests.

Modifications have recently been made in the routine of the Oil flow tests. The reason being that the figures obtained by the various Depots have not been consistent, also times have not substantiated the condition of the bearings.

To make the test as stable and consistent as possible we have established the following routine:

(a) When the Owner or Tester reports low oil pressure or thump, the engine is oil flowed straight away before allowing it to cool down below 45°C. crankcase temp:

(b) If cold the car is taken on the road for approx. 20 miles so that the crank absorbs the maximum heat. The engine is then allowed to rest until the temperature reads 45°C. (crankcase)(45°C. has been agreed upon because of the inaccuracy of the thermometer at K.{Mr Kilner} which was found to be 10°C. low, and 45° with the soaking heat as averaged out all the readings given.)

To give the amount of lift in the No.7. bearing the engine is taken out of the frame, bottom half removed, a dial gauge is fastened to the crankcase and the needle pointer rests on the turned flange of No.7. Journal bearing. A lever is placed between the flywheel and casing and reasonable leverage used to take up any slack in No.7. bearing. The remaining bearings are checked if necessary, after removal of the crank, by a known gauge, the bearing and housing being replaced and tightened up.

The time now taken for bearings warranting attention is 3 mins. 30 secs. in place of 4 mins. as previously recommended ( Halls metal).
