which was carried out up to the danger point the side surge of the oil in the sump was but a fraction as violent as that taking place as a result of brake application.

Motion pictures were taken of these tests showing the placing of the oil in the pan with same mounted on the running board, charging of the oil with 350 c.c. of water and the violent brake applications above referred to. After some ten or twelve violent brake applications a sample of the oil was drawn from the oil feed line loading from the pump in an effort to disclose upon analysis by the laboratory the amount of water which was placed in suspension by this violent treatment. The B.W.P. device was then held down to a point in the sump simulating the draw-off level of the conventional system and a further sample of oil drawn off to disclose the quality of the oil should the quantity get sufficiently low as to cause the oil suction level to be at this point. These two samples were analysed by the Detroit Testing Laboratory. The following is their report:

Sample Drawn From 1/2" of Top Surface of Oil.

Water Content.

.651 % by weight.
.600 % by volume.

Sample drawn From 1/2" Of Bottom Of Sump

Water Content.

.883 % by weight.
.801 % by volume.

Immediately after drawing off the samples above referred to a third sample was withdrawn from a suction level 1/4 of an inch above the bottom of the sump showing that water had not been disturbed and was still in a mass below the B.W.P. device.
