The Laboratory report on the broken valve from the above engine, whilst it indicates a choked water way, does not connect the failure with the choked water way, as the latter is too far removed from the valve seat to affect the issue. The valve has been very hot, and has stretched due to force of impact of the valve on the seating, which may be due to the valve leaving the cam before the toe of the latter becomes effective. A contributory factor may be insufficient sectional area in valve head to allow the heat to escape via the seat or an insufficiently cooled seating due to water flow through the head not effectively cooling the seat.
