X.2677 X.7460 X.5460 PETROL PUMPS. As the A.C. standard petrol pump could not be fitted, we sent you a drawing of the modifications necessary using their valves and diaphragm and making the test of the parts as reliable as possible with the fabric diaphragm. We came to the conclusion that a small air chamber on the suction would be extremely valuable at all speeds for reasonably efficient action. We also noticed that there is more clearance than is needed in the A.C. pump. This would be rather bad in case it ran out of petrol and would tend towards failure of self priming in the case of the valve springs being somewhat stiff. There is much less volumetric clearance in our design. Another feature in connection with these pumps is that it seems highly desirable that the diaphragm when working at its full stroke should pass through a neutral position at the centre of the stroke. In our design the diaphragm cannot be damaged by incorrect adjustment of the tappets and the worst that can happen is that its maximum quantity would be reduced. It will be noticed that the A.C. spares of valves and diaphragms can be used for our fittings, and the application to the Phantom engine is clean and neat and all the work is simple circular work with the minimum number of parts, and we have taken advantage of the "A.C." and "Correct"pumps features so that there is nothing novel that needs experimenting with.
