RE NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I CAR IN AMERICA.

Reference your EP{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}8/H30.12.25 with attached copy of letter from OY. referring to the 12 volt generator on the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I car. Our remarks on this letter are as follows :-

We are surprised that there is more difficulty with the American 12-volt lamp bulbs on the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I car than there was on the Silver Ghost with the Lucas generator with its high output at all speeds above a moderate speed.

It is true that the New PhantomCodename for PHANTOM I output on the peak, i.e. for a short range of speed only, may be in some instances slightly in excess of the sustained Lucas output on the Silver Ghost, and that we are reducing the output slightly to avoid too large a peak of volts and amperes.

It may not be generally realised that a so-called 12-volt battery may, whilst fully charged and charging, have a true E.M.F. at 16.8 volts (we have actually observed this figure across the terminals of the battery by switching off the charge and taking the figure immediately.

When we add to this the drop of potential due to ohmic resistance, it is clear that the P.D. across a 12 volt battery, fully charged and charging at a high rate,
