Bailey - Chief Engineer} Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}7/T17.12.34. Re Bentley Chassis B.11-AE. Mrs. Smith-Bingham. Thank you for your Sg{Arthur F. Sidgreaves - MD}1/E14.12.34 and we agree that it is a very serious matter for a pivot pin to break. I attach a report prepared by BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} after consultation with Exptl. Dept., which goes some way towards solving the problem. I do not think however, that we can consider this matter settled and it will need much further consideration, and the parts are now being examined by E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} Referring to my conversation with you on the telephone this afternoon, it would appear that Kingsbury have only changed the one pivot pin which broke, and we should like you, if it is possible, to get this car for a couple of days, so that we might change the axle entirely and bring the old one to Derby for further examination. To amplify BY's. memo, where he states that the strength of the pivot pin was increased at the commencement of "C" Series approximately 25%, we should say that the pivot pin which broke on Mrs. Smith-Bingham's car is one of the weaker type, that is to say, the earlier type. In addition, we think that maybe this breakage may have something to do with the owner driving up fast behind something and using the brakes very severely, that is to say, it is thought that this job cannot be entirely removed from the question of brakes. We have never had a similar occurrence on any car, but I am sure it needs further examination. Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} P.S. These axles could be changed at Kingsbury if more convenient. attd copy BY2/G17.12.34. | ||
