Dear Robotham,

Reference your letter of the 28th.October, I propose to take the following steps to measure the relative corrosion resisting properties of the nine samples of cylinder liners referred to :-

Each liner will be run in the apparatus for 40 hours in an oxidising atmosphere with seven stops overnight to assess standing as well as running corrosion.

The liners will then be cleaned in brushwash, weighed and returned to you with a detailed report on the tests and photomicrographs from the metalurgical department where necessary.

This procedure will envolve 360 hours running time as each sample will thus take a week run at approximately 6 hours per day. The whole job will take nine or ten weeks.

As a lubricant I suggest using the same oil to DTD 109 specification, used in all other tests, to render them comparable with previous work.

I should like you to refer to the draft report sent you on the 13th.May, and to let me know whether you would prefer me to use Air or O2 for this work, the latter gives more definite corrosion in a shorter time and tests are directly comparable with those using Air.

As your bores are smaller than the sections of 5" aircraft liners I have been using, I shall have to get
