The car is now fitted with the 40/50 HP. starter motor, 40/50 type front silencer, block type engine coupling, and improved controls. After we had made these changes, the car was definitely less smooth. We have since tried several tests comparing the solid block type coupling with the fabric coupling and we are convinced that the fabric coupling makes a much smoother car and gets rid of vibrations which can be felt when both driving forward and on retard. We cannot use the fabric coupling with the standard 40/50 starter arrangement. It may be possible to alter the 40/50 starter gear, but still retain the same scheme so that the fabric coupling could be used. We may also find that with alteration to the alignment of the engine and gearbox, we might reduce the roughness with the solid coupling. At present we make certain that the two are correctly in line with the car stationary. It is possible when the drive is taken, this alters. As regards the vibrations on the steering column and wheel which occur at 10 m.p.h. approximately. We find that a similar period occurs on the standard 40/50 cars and the steerings vibrate in a similar manner at the same speeds. contd :- | ||
