You will realise that the connections to the switches should have contacts as fool-proof as possible, easy to adjust, but above all, thoroughly reliable.

I looked at the signalling apparatus in Kemp's handbook and found that for such an important job as the automatic signalling on the railway they use the type of contact I suggested.

As regards whether you have a separate handle for the ignition it would appear to me that if you once go back to two handles you might adopt largely our old scheme of the two notch plates being worked by one spring, and the two drums close together side by side. On the lighting side the first position would be accessories, and on the ignition side there would be very little to do as this need not be locked if the whole of the accessories come from the lighting side. So that the three lighting positions would be (a) accessories only, (b) S. T. and parking, (c) S.T. & H.{Arthur M. Hanbury - Head Complaints} running full speed. Thus there would be about three positions on each side, or one above the other if you wish.
