Steering Pendulum Levers.

It is agreed that we should put in hand some replacement pendulum levers for all existing experimental cars. The new design will have an increased lever section, the reinforced shaft boss at the box end, but the original standard 1.125 dia. splines.

A suitable wartime material should be specified, approximating closely to our normal specification and the heat treatment should be stated. Further, the levers will be polished, crack tested and shot blasted. The lubrication to the ball end will be by drip-plug on the ball end boss.

Apparently 18 different levers were in existance when work on the car job ceased in 1940. The levers as found fitted to the various cars when they were examined for cracked pendulum levers a short while ago are tabulated in the appendix Sheet 1.

Obviously it is not possible or desirable to reproduce such a range of strengthened levers at this time. As the result of a discussion between FJH.{Fred J. Hardy - Chief Dev. Engineer} Ev.{Ivan Evernden - coachwork} and Ev{Ivan Evernden - coachwork}/DB.{Donald Bastow - Suspensions} it was decided that all of the cars could be covered for the rest of the war by producing 3 types of strengthened lever, particulars of which are given in the appendix Sheet 2.

This sheet also quotes the lever numbers of the dies which we require for modifying to produce the new strengthened levers. They are as follows :-

1. FB. 5075 or FB.4113 or FB.4155 or FB.4387.
2. FB.5076 or FB.4388 or FB.4200 or FB.5365.
3. FW.2108 or FW.1878 or FW.1966 or FB.5253.

We would be glad if Wym{G. Harold Whyman - Experimental Manager}/Lee would locate one die of each lever length and have it delivered to Clan Foundry.

The Design Office should immediately put in hand designs of the new levers. These should take the form of a detail drawing almost, giving accurate dimensions of the various lever sections, the material and treatment, finish etc.
