UNIT TESTING.

Engine Testing. It is proposed to obtain dynamos having rotatably mounted field magnets and to mount these ourselves with tackle which will enable us to measure the torque on the field magnets by means of weighted or spring mounted levers. This scheme is undoubtedly the best that can be devised; the horse power is measured directly and the results will be accurate. At the same time the rig can be conveniently used for running light without extravagance. - the only expense being in petrol and oil consumed. It should be possible with experience to efficiently tune up the engine by bench tests before it is put on the chassis, because every condition of load can be imposed by means of varying resistances. It will be necessary to teach the tests what condition of engine when on thetest bench will give the desired result when put on the chassis, but this is a question of training and should not be difficult.

Progress of the scheme in Shops. I understand from Mr. Nadin that we have written for quotations for the dynamos from Messrs Royce Ltd. but these are not yet to hand although we have repeatedly enquired for them. Nothing else can be done in the matter until we obtain some technical information concerning the dynamos.

Gear box testing. We have the first rig running on which are mounted two gear boxes, end to end, the load being imposed by a differentially driven friction clutch. We have not had mud
