56" Leaf Spring.

Dear Sirs,

With reference to your letter dated February 27th. we would like to give you some further facts concerning our proposed 56" spring.

At the moment you are supplying us with 56" springs of poundages ranging from 1100 lb. to 1300 lb. (FW.1781) leaf width 2¼".

The 50" 1000 lb. spring (FB.4271) weighs approximately 33 lb. and has a leaf width of 2".

It would be to our advantage if we could scrap this latter spring in favour of a 56" spring with a 2¼" leaf width, thus enabling us to standardise one spring with a variety of poundages ranging from say 950 lb. to 1300 lb. It would also allow us to use the same anchorages, shackles, etc. for all springs instead of using two of everything as we do at the moment.

At the same time it is most important that the weight of the proposed 56" spring should not be appreciably greater than that of the existing 50" spring. In your last letter you stated that you could make us a 56" spring weighing 36½ lb. but that you thought that seven leaves, as this spring would have, was on the low side.

However, as it would be an entirely experimental spring we do not mind this, and we would rather you reduce the weight even further at the risk of over stressing the leaves. Our tests here will satisfy us as to its practicability.
