Bailey - Chief Engineer} Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}1/MJ.19.1.31. X. 5410. X. 5520. 25 HP. SPRINGING. As you are aware, Springfield complained bitterly of the riding of our 25 HP. cars. One car on which they had fitted the body they had altered the front springs and the shock absorber loads, also drilled the valves, and one had to admit when comparing this car with either of the two demonstration cars which were sent over the car they had altered gave a considerably better ride. I took out with me to U.S.A. a set of weaker front springs for the 25 HP. anticipating the riding complaints. I found when I got there that the springs they had already fitted were practically the same as those which I took out there. Whilst there, we altered the springing of one of the demonstration cars. We fitted to it the weaker front springs which I had taken out there and we made the shock absorber loading similar to that which they found to be the best on the Springfield car. After we had made these alterations the riding was very much better. The modified front springs have been proved out on the bumper and we are very anxious to adopt these in order to improve the springing of the 25HP. In the meantime Springfield wanted me to let them know what they were to do with two or three other 25 HP. cars out there which have unsatisfactory springing. The modification to them is not very expensive because it only means re-building the front springs using the same top leaf and altering the loads on the shock absorbers. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}/Rn.{Mr Robinson} has already written and asked if you would let us have one of your 25 HP. Trials cars in order that we can modify the springing, following the results obtained at Springfield I agreed when I was there that as the front springs which I had taken out had been used up on one of the demonstration cars which is still our property, they would not be charged for.
