To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} X.4256 Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}3/T4.12.23. RE. 20 HP. REAR AXLE. X.4256. Reference R1/M.12.23. All the axle pinions so far that we have tested have been to the original dimensions as regards length of teeth and radii. The comparisons made have been with C.H.N.S. and air hardened steel, and thickness of tooth with coarse gear. The results so far show the air hardened steel to be better than C.H.N.S. for wear.
