Dear Sirs,

Shock Damper Test Rig.

We want to operate a shock damper test rig by a 5 H.P. motor which runs at 1,500 r.p.m. The final shaft is to run at either 70 r.p.m. or 630 r.p.m., according to the test we are doing (speeds correspond to car bounce frequency and tyre bounce frequency).

We thought we might buy a 3-1 gearbox: reduce the 1,500 r.p.m. to 210 r.p.m. either by belts or another gearbox, and use the 3-1 gearbox to convert 210 r.p.m. to 70 or 630 r.p.m. by fixing it one way or the other (the changeover is not done very frequently).

We should appreciate any suggestions you are able to make concerning suitable drives, and we should like to know their cost. We could run the 210 r.p.m. shaft at 200 r.p.m., if you happen to have a standard worm and wheel or other gear giving a 7 1/2:1 reduction.

Yours faithfully,
For ROLLS-ROYCE LTD.
