To E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} from R.{Sir Henry Royce} c. to CJ. BJ. c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} +8300 S E C R E T. EAC+ ENGINE. R6/M8.5.24. DETONATIONS, OVER-RUNNING VIBRATIONS, AND CLUTCH BRAKE. X.9550 +8300 X.9301 X8005 DETONATIONS. Although this engine seems extremely good with benzol mixture as tested on the 6th. we should early like to make a move on the better position of the plug for a double synchronised ignition, of double batteryignition plus standby magneto (RR. Goshawk scheme). Because for fast cars there seems no reason for reducing the compression ratio below 4.5 except detonations. We have already schemed something which appears worth trying out. OVER-RUN VIBRATIONS. On the 6th. I thought there was little to complain about with the stiffer coupling shaft, but Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} reports a definite improvement with the longer rods so we ought to fit these as soon as possible. I was pleased to feel that our chassis EAC.2. was a RR. chassis, distinctly better than Hispano with right minded people. Our worst feature must be the clutch not coming to rest, confirming our surmise of gravity which we have now taken advantage of. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
