Re Easy Starting. Wor{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager}/EH2/L6115.

With reference to easy starting, Mr. Hives' arrangement appears to be very simple and sufficiently effective. It meets my suggestion of pumping air only, though it will be understood that the quantity of petrol sent into the induction pipe will be very much greater than the corresponding amount of air delivered by the hand pump. The non-return valve in the float chamber appears to be the worst feature about it. A little experience will show us whether this will really cause any trouble.

In this arrangement the delivery cock between the petrol and the induction pipe could be close to the float feed chamber, and should, without doubt, be connected to the 3-way tap, so as to open and close together, and they should be spring controlled so that one is obliged to hold them in the priming condition while the hand pump is being used for priming. This would make the arrangement less liable to be wrongly handled.

Mr. Elliott had a rather simple application of my suggestion of pumping the air on the top of the petrol in a closed chamber. This arrangement is also very simple using the standard hand pump and the 3-way cock in the usual way. I think both arrangements might be completed to see which would work out the easier, and if possible avoid the non-
