R.R. 493A (50 H) (D.D. 31, 12-6-25) J.H.D. EXPERIMENTAL REPORT. Expl. No. REF: Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}5/109.10.25. ORIGINAL To R.{Sir Henry Royce} from Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} c.c. to CJ. BJ. c.c. to RG.{Mr Rowledge} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} c.c. to DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} EY. c.c. to Wor.{Arthur Wormald - General Works Manager} 'PHANTOM' GEARBOX. 48310 We have found on the Phantom gearbox, when the levers are arranged to suit the subframe which does away with the notches in the gate, that the 1st. and 2nd. speeds will tend to work out under power unless the pinions were made torsionally free and also that the length of the splines was so arranged that they were out of centre with the teeth on the gear wheel. This means that the 40/50 HP. gearbox has behaved in the same way as the 4-speed box on the 'India' and similar modifications have overcome the trouble. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} | ||
