London Trials. GYZ-40.
GYZ-31.

I have received your memo EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer}16/EH.30.10.33.

I note that you find that the performance of these cars was at least up to your standard at Brooklands on Monday, when making tests with GYZ-31 in this respect in parallel with GWB-70, the ex-London Trials 25, now sold. We found that the high speed performance of the older car came out at not less than 4 miles better than that of GYZ-31, both on the flying mile and flying half-mile, the former being practically 76 m.p.h.

Of course, for psychological reasons it is obvious that to be able to top 70 is a good talking point:

It does not appear to me unreasonable or unlikely that the difference in performance is due to one car having been run in thoroughly and the other being less so, the new car having run only 1,500 miles, and probably the difference will be made up (at any rate by the time we have to sell it).

It is certainly very disconcerting that no method seems to be known enabling you to prevent spitting in the silencer, which in the case of GYZ-31 is just as much in evidence as before you had it at the Works last week. As you say, this is undoubtedly a matter for design, but at the same time it is not everyone of these latest cars which suffers from this trouble, and it is very important that we should get to know how to stop the distortion of the throttle-disc and its housing if this is the cause of the trouble.

With regard to the retard drive groan or rattle which is recognised as being a feature of many of the recent 25 h.p. chassis. Is the scheme, which you state is now available for dealing with this, one which can be put on the car without any experimental aspect, because surely this part of it can be done on one of your many chassis going through your hands at L., and as you know our trials cars are at it pretty well day and night in connection with trial runs of one sort or another.
