Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/Std.5/Ap. March 28th.1938 Messrs S.Smith & Sons Ltd., Cricklewood Works, LONDON N.W.2. For the attention of Mr.Grose. Dear Sirs, With regard to the car heater set which you sent us for examination - we regret the delay in communicating with you regarding same. We were very disappointed to find that the heater in question was an American one and not made up by yourselves - we already have tested many American heaters and defrosters and in most cases have found them too bulky and heavy. The set which you sent us is one of the worst we have met in these respects and although we have spent a considerable amount of time endeavouring to fit it in on a car, it proves to be impossible to do so. It is obviously useless fitting up a heater for test which cannot possibly be used in Production owing to size and weight, so we are returning the complete unit to you. We may mention that the unit in which we are primarily interested at the moment and which was made for us to our design by Messrs John Marston Ltd., gives adequate heating and weighs 6 lbs. as compared with approximately 12 lbs for the heater you sent us (i.e. each without defrosting nozzles and connections). We send you herewith a print of a drawing of our heater which might interest you. We would like you to let us have as soon as possible a thermostat to X.30065/5 but with a special opening setting of 68° - 70°C instead of that of 78° - 80°C as called for on this drawing. We require this for test bed use and are forwarding an official order for same. Yours faithfully, FOR ROLLS-ROYCE LIMITED. | ||
