X6118. By.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from EFC. (2 copies) EFCB/AD27.3.31. X.6118. SUGGESTION RELATING TO LUBRICATION OF BATTERY IGNITION DISTRIBUTOR CAM. An experiment of lubricated cam similar to Mr.Rose's suggestion was carried out some time ago, our conclusions were that with the present standard rubbing block a pad was unnecessary as the wear, dry, was only very small and with the occasional greasing recommended in the Instruction book, was negligible. A spring loaded pad as suggested would mean a continual oscillation of the felt pad on the cam and would be unsatisfactory, whereas a mere trace only of lubricant on the lobes is required. No other makes of battery ignition equipment provide such a scheme. In regard to the flat referred to, though a slight flat may develop in the early stages and very slightly affect the contact breaker gap, the development of this flat is normally so small as definitely to cause no trouble. If a flat develops abnormally it indicates an unsatisfactory finished smoothness of the cam. We recall that one or two cases of lack of smoothness in cams occurred some years ago but that since that time the cams have been so smooth as to cause no complaint. We return herewith the papers in connection with this suggestion. EFC. | ||
