REPORT ON 18-EX CAR AFTER 10,000 MILES
TEST IN FRANCE.

Engine 'SS{S. Smith}' No.7.

The performance of the engine remained good throughout the test. It improved with the running in regard to periods. At the finish it was smooth yet powerful. Detonations were the same as reported at 5000 miles.

Lubrication of cylinders.

These were examined. Lubrication was ample and even. The condition of the cylinder walls was very good.

Valves & Fittings to 10P.E.77652. N.S. 1101.
Rocker shafts to drg. V.453.
Oil restriction plugs fitted in rockers to drg. V.410.
Valves springs E.78771.

We had no trouble with valves during the test. Clearances remained fairly normal; when examined one valve shewed signs of having picked up brass from the seat, the others were in perfect condition. Lubrication of valve stems was good and very little wear could be detected. Lubrication of rocker shafts had been ample and condition of bearings was good. A 10 mins. slow running test did not shew any signs of oil passing the valves. Period of valve noise remained as reported at 5000 miles.

Filter in engine sump.

This remained very clean throughout the test. Failure of oil pressure is entirely due to swish of oil from the filter when braking. This being attended to.

Pistons to 10P: E.78563. Lec.2578. E.78440.

No further knocks were heard other than reported at 5000 miles - condition of pistons when examined shewed very good bedding. No deterioration could be observed - all further rings were free.

Ignition plugs - Lodge detachable.

We had one failure during the test - the plug oiled up, after cleaning it was O.K.
