HS.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} E.{Mr Elliott - Chief Engineer} } FROM R.{Sir Henry Royce} [REDACTED] } (At Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence.) ORIGINAL SECRET R2/M14.1.29. REC'D AT WW. 18.1.29. 20HP. AT CHATEAUXREUX. 10,000 MILES TEST. X5840e X.5970 X1918 X5005 Apparently there is not much wrong with this, 4 pairs of drivers making it cover 760miles per day, at an average of 38 MPH., including more than half dark running. One gathers that the chief trouble with the engine was plugs overheating because they were not of a suitable type. My impression is that we are moving towards requiring cooler working plugs for cars than in the past, as we are making the engines give more power and therefore approaching aero engine conditions. I have thought that the K.L.G's we are using for car work less liable to cause pre-ignitions than the Lodge porcelain ones we use for this work. Like the SS.{S. Smith} chassis the only thing that requires radical change is the engine mounting (see other memo.) As this is the present standard it shews that it is an urgent matter to get this of the improved type, and get the whole thing into production at the first possible moment. R.{Sir Henry Royce} | ||
