NEW PHANTOMCodename for PHANTOM I.

In regard to instructions received from R.{Sir Henry Royce} and CJ. it will be necessary for us to at once issue to the Works instructions to produce and fit the following parts:-

a/- The larger diameter of worm with slightly slower steering, including of course the new box etc. suitable for same.

b/- The spring driven friction damped pendulum lever.

c/- In addition to the foregoing, R.{Sir Henry Royce} requires us to fit hydraulic shock dampers between the axle and the frame. As we have not details of this, we cannot at the moment issue instructions.

I have wired Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} pointing out that in regard to a/-, it will mean a new position for the steering column on the dashboard. In other words, the improved column cannot be fitted to an existing dashboard without modifying the dashboard to the extent of opening the hole out in the dashboards and plugging two holes nearest to the centre line of the car and re-drilling same. Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} agrees to this proposal, we should therefore get out the necessary information and issue it to the works at once.

As no material is in production for either of the above parts, and since it is most important that we should turn out as large a number of chassis as possible, the foregoing instruction must mean we are to carry on with the existing steering column until the new one is ready to be fitted, but the utmost pressure must be brought to bear upon the necessary tools and equipment and material to enable the new parts to be brought in at the earliest possible moment.

We read Mr. Royce's instruction in regard to steering, where he says 'slightly lower', to mean lead with increased pendulum lever, but we are wiring Da.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design}
