-5- EFC1/AML6.5.30. contd. we have nothing in hand with the size and drive speed of the machine which we can use, the unreduced output is always arranged to be its maximum permissible by adjustment of the control brush position. The limit is the heating limit working to definite schedules of voltage and temperature rise which have been established from long experience. Mr.Elliott's proposal of putting resistance in the dynamo positive brush wire appeared on principle, to be likely to give a somewhat better cutting in result on reduced charge even without much increasing the watts to be dissipated in the resistance. It was found however, that for the same peak reduction, the curve was not much improved and that the watts were greater relatively than was expected to be the case. In regard to the means of knowing the state of the battery charge, we wrote on this matter in our EFC5/AML7.1.30 remarking that there was no one superficial condition of the elements or electrolyte which can be regarded as a criterion of full charge independently of previous history. As far as we can see voltmeter indications are likely to be as useful as any in view of the fact that the terminal P.D. is a quantity which at least can be measured accurately. In regard to garage charging equipment, we have now on order for the experimental garage a Westinghouse metal rectifier set capable of giving full rate charge to a chassis size battery.
