EFC. WC.66. 21.1.28. LUCAS ER6 MAGNETO NO.54A EX CHASSIS 7-EX. This magneto has now been returned to the laboratory after running nearly 14,000 miles on chassis 7-EX which was used by R.{Sir Henry Royce} at Le CanadelHenry Royce's French residence, etc. We have tested the magneto as received on the bench and find it to be O.K. (after correct adjustment of the contact breaker point gap which was .016") and much the same as when it was placed on the chassis. A comparison of the low speed sparking results before and after the run on the car is as follows :- Before (10.8.26). After (20.1.28) 80 r.p.m. - Advance - 90 r.p.m. 105 r.p.m. - Central - 120 r.p.m. 165 r.p.m. - Retard - 185 r.p.m. This shews the reliability of the machine electrically to be reasonably good. The magneto was then dismantled for examination. Mechanically the magneto was perfectly O.K. the end bearing which is not provided with a lubricating oilway being still full of lubricant. The contact breaker points had worn down about 75%,from which we estimate the contact point life at 20,000 miles. Three of the distributor segments shewed slight signs of burning at the edge but otherwise the distributor was O.K. The distributor bakelite wheel and the plain bearing were also in good condition. The magneto has since been cleaned and re-assembled, and is now quite O.K. for further use if necessary. Upon the return of 15-EX after the 10,000 mile test in France; we wish to similarly treat the Watford EW6. magneto No.100081; we shall thus be enabled to make a definite comparison of the reliability of each machine.
