1305 Rm{William Robotham - Chief Engineer}/AFM.{Anthony F. Martindale} 11th August, 1939. Toledo Woodhead Springs Ltd., Toledo Spring Works, SHEFFIELD. 1. (For the attention of Mr. Woodhead.) Dear Sirs, Creaks from Springs. We have been running "Spaldite" interleaving for some 14,000 miles on one car, and as regards endurance, the road test bears out the rig tests, that is to say the life appears satisfactory. Another trouble has developed, all our leaf springs are now "creaking", some after a very small mileage. We regard interleaving as a necessary evil to enable us to use your unground springs. When the springs were ground we were able to pass a thin oil along machined grooves, and although your spring has grooves we imagine oil would not stay in them very long. Grease might, however, and we are going to pack two cars' springs with Mobiloil 6. The groove being on the underside of the spring, the grease should more readily flow outwards in between the rubbing surfaces.
