Coverley - Production Engineer}/SB.{Mr Bull/Mr Bannister}2/MC.22.11.37, we appreciate the difficulties of fitting aluminized downtake pipes on a production basis and are therefore agreeable to these pipes remaining in Staybright for the time being. We are experimenting with nickel plated mild steel downtake pipes, but have not run sufficient time as yet to be able to vouch for their reliability. The front expansion box and intermediate pipe can still be made in Aluminized mild steel, and the Aluminizing can cease 2.000" from the weld, thus deleting the flanged joint. It should be carefully noted, however, that lagging must NOT be fitted where the pipe is NOT Aluminized. We understand that the above modification will result in a saving of £2. 11. 0d. per car.
