We have just had on test a new unit assembled with parts as received from the Works. The valves in the fully lifted position with tappets set normal are choc-a-bloc, and it is, therefore, necessary to run the engine with the plungers right up, which means that the auto adjustment is not in action. After running in, etc. for 6 hours the condition was still the same, and upon removing the grummets found they were considerably thicker than the drawing shows, resulting in the top washer fouling the bottom spring cup in the valve lifted position. We understand that the thicker grummets were instructed for by the Test Dept., but we must point out that if the same thing happens without the precaution of checking, considerable damage may be done; bent push rods, excessive wear on bottom tappets and flats on the cam tips.
