THE JOSEPH LUCAS RESEARCH LABORATORIES. BIRMINGHAM. ENGLAND. REFRIGERATOR REPORT NO. R.121. REF. 5/3. DATE 27th Nov:1933. JLL/RB.{R. Bowen}W R.R. COPIES TO Mr.Toulmin. A.File. Mr.W.E.Robinson. B.File. N.File. REPORT ON "BENSPORT" BENTLEY CAR (ROLLS ROYCE) The above model was again brought in for test in the Refrigerator on November 23rd 1933, by Mr.West and Mr.Lidsey (of Messrs.Rolls Royce) for their own information as to its startability (see previous report R.113, 2/8/33). It was arranged that, as before, we should insert instruments and obtain, as far as possible, our usual measurements prior to their startability tests. It is understood that since the previous tests the piston design has been altered, otherwise there has been no change in the engine. It is not possible, however, to compare the results obtained on the two tests, owing to temperature differences, the first test being carried out at -6°C and the present one at -1°C. Readings with a spring balance on the crankshaft at a radius of 7.125" were obtained at the start, and resulted in 35 lbs. on compression and 30 lbs. off compression. An engine speed of 40 r.p.m. was obtained with the clutch in, corresponding to a crankshaft torque of 71.8. lbs.ft, and at this speed a comparatively easy start was obtained, although the engine appeared reluctant to run. | ||
