CWB10/H10.2.25.

Chassis 68-AU.

In company with EP.{G. Eric Platford - Chief Quality Engineer} and MX.{John H Maddocks - Chief Proving Officer} I have tested this car this afternoon, and understand that W. cannot at present hold out any hope of improving it in any definite time whatsoever. The transmission noises complained of are still exceedingly noisy and acute and most objectionable, both on direct drive and on the gears. On the latter they are present on the overrun as well as the forward drive.

As regards the objectionable nature and intensity of these, they are at least equal to that of 19-AU (Runciman) and in my opinion are even slightly worse.

Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} with whom I have consulted, advises that these noises can be completely eliminated by fitting of the old type spring coupling between the clutch and gear box, and that he has in hand a modification of the fabric coupling, designed for another car, which in his opinion will also remove these groans, but it is impossible to have this ready, tested and approved in anything under a month.

I suggest in order to do something which is a reasonable chance of effecting a permanent cure in a definite time, that the very best of the stock or other chassis which are or can be made available, is chosen, and the body from 68-AU is immediately transferred to this chassis, which can then be returned to W. for further experimental investigation, and probably in any case can be ultimately made good by the fitting of the proposed new fabric coupling, for which purpose the necessary time would then be available.

The Works therefore require intimation of what chassis there are available for this purpose, so that the necessary selection, if possible, can be made.

Will you please advise W. of your decision.

CWB.
