'SS{S. Smith}' REAR SHOCK DAMPER.

Herewith we send N.schs. 2801/2 shewing modifications to the existing rear shock damper, to overcome defects revealed on the bumping rig and on the road.

N.sch.2801 shews a strengthened outside lever, and also an improved shaft. We have indicated on one of the sections the improvements over the existing lever.

N.sch.2802 shews the improved attachment of the feet to the shock damper casing, (which is as far as we understand from the report of the test on the bumping rig, but the matter is not quite clear to us,) an improved area of connecting link bearing in view of reports that the existing area is insufficient (thought we believe there has been no failure), and a strengthened internal lever because though there is no mention in the bumping rig report of a fractured lever, we have seen specimens, and it appears that there is a possibility of an essential weakness in the boss of the lever hitherto used.

We sent you improvements to the piston a day or two ago, and with these last two drgs. we have done all that we intend to do immediately on the rear damper.
