(2) The driving pinion on No. 1 gear shaft should have a 1 in 200 taper, although the drawing actually shews a taper of greater rapidity. Drill webs of wheel for lightness, after hard-enging. (3) Try helical change speed wheels on second gear. the hands can be arranged of the permanent mesh, and second gear wheels, so that the sliding wheel is pushed rearwards against the ends of the castellated, the shaft being made as in sketch and the side shaft being in balance so that it throws no end load on its journal bearings. [sketch of a castellated shaft end] (4) Hubs can be still lighter than shewn on LeC.1157 (5) Lighten speedometer driving gear, as sketched on LeC.1157. (6) The sketch shewn has been drawn for the original American chassis with left hand steering. The order of the change gear mechanism should now be reversed when detailing, to suit right hand steering. (7) The normal position of the change gear speed lever is inclined sideways towards the driver. This is a great convenience in allowing the mechanism of the box to be central, and will avoid pushing the gear lever against the passengers legs. The inclination will now be changed over to suit the driver on the right hand side of the chassis. (8) The two unnumbered schemes sent with our memo of the 13th inst. although correct more or less in principle, are not right dimensionally, and will be corrected as soon as you return them to us.
