To BY.{R.W. Bailey - Chief Engineer} from DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} c. to BJ. Hs.{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair} 47350 DAL/M25.6.27. HYPOID REAR AXLE GEARS. X.2066 X.7350 We have discussed again the question of hypoid rear axle gears, and R.{Sir Henry Royce} wishes us to proceed immediately to order one with 1" offset. He thinks however that the crown wheel shewn on N.sch.2399 is rather thin, and we have made N.sch.2427 which we send herewith, shewing the slight modifications necessary to reduce the thickness of the crown wheel. As shewn on N.sch.2399 the differential box was the same as that for the 2" offset: on N.sch.2428 it has been necessary to slightly alter the differential box. We have also had to move the pinion tail bearing away from the centreline of the crown gear slightly in order to give clearance for the differential, but with the exception of this alteration the axle casing is the same as on N.sch.2399. Would you please hand a drg. of the hypoid gears to CY. as soon as possible, so that he can take it personally to the Gleason Co. With reference to the 2" offset gears R.{Sir Henry Royce} has explained he did not intend to stop them, and as we believe you have the fittings for them, and the gears themselves are on the point of delivery, no doubt we shall be in order in proceeding with that experiment, on say EAC.7. chassis in order to learn something about hypoid gears. It is the intention however to seriously only on those with the 1" offset. DA.{Bernard Day - Chassis Design} | ||
