X.3056. RE PETROL CONSUMPTION ON 40/50 CHASSIS.

In our memo. Hs{Lord Ernest Hives - Chair}2/LG30.9.20. we pointed out that it was possible to obtain very remarkable consumptions on our present 40/50 chassis. We have since, on a run from Derby to West WitteringHenry Royce's home town, averaged 28 M.P.G. with an open-touring car weighing complete 2 1/2 tons, at an average speed of 25 M.P.H. over 180 mls.

We have lately carried out a number of tests on 6.EX Car to find how the petrol is used. The car was run with thin oil throughout the transmission - castrol oil in the engine. These tests were carried out under the same road conditions i.e., over a level piece of tar macadam road - dry condition.

We first carried out a number of tests to find the most economical position of mixture and ignition. We found it was not economical to run with a starving or very weak mixture. We obtained the best consumption when the mixture was adjusted to give full power at a particular throttle opening; we found this by setting the throttle in a certain position. We then adjusted the mixture so that we obtained the maximum speed - if we made it weak so
