the lubrication troubles on the Bentley was a carefully worked out scheme, starting from journals and passing through to what was almost a final modification of an extra hole on the pin when we had ensured a sufficient supply of oil through the journals. The only later move was, since the intermediate journals were short on length and the pressure therefore fell round the grooves in these journals, then in the longer journals three holes were introduced to make sure that an adequate oil supply would pass into the interior of the crank in spite of the reduced oil pressure resulting from the shorter length of journal. Finally, I would point out that the Bentley was only got right by strenuously sticking to the problem of a period of eighteen months, but finally the problem was solved and it was not possible to blow a big end of the Bentley by any condition of service.
