the P & R Co. respectively, so that they could see for
themselves what was put into the cells which had given such
good results in our hands. Shortly afterwards we received a
report written by Mr. Preston of the P & R Co., copy of which
please find attached as being worth reproducing herewith.
Meanwhile, owing to good results, a number of
other Accu-Slem batteries were obtained.
After some preliminary routine testing, these
batteries were disposed as follows:-
One Accu-Slem battery was left intact. This
is at present being used on Test Dept. service, and except for
the slight trouble of corrosion of the terminals, has given,
and is still giving good service.
By utilising cells of the then up-to-date
improved standard Exide 6BXRE5 batteries, together with two
Accu-Slem batteries, four sandwich batteries were made up
each containing three Accu-Slem and three Exide cells. Of these
four batteries, three were placed on 40/50 cars 5-EX, 46-PK
(now at W.W.) and 93-NK, and in each of these cases they are so
far giving no trouble. The fourth sandwich battery was put
in our bench life test, and is also so far in good order.
The object of such sandwiching is a direct
comparison between the lives of the cells of different makes.
It should be re-mentioned that the Accu-Slem cells have not
got some of the features which have been considered to be
improvements in the Exide 6BXRE5 cells, namely :-
