- 6 - Front shock dampers. (continued) It is probable that the bolt failed in the first instance, and was the cause of the failure of the lever. We have had oil leaks from the bearing of O.S. damper and from top valve cap on N.S. It has been necessary to recharge these with oil;due to the leaks. Clutch. The clutch has been erratic in stopping throughout the test. We have not been able to effect a cure by adjusting the levers. The action of the clutch when engaging has been smooth and no signs of slipping has occured. Gearbox. All gearbox joints fitted with VELLUMOID washers to L.O.P. C.51E70. There are oil leaks from top cover of change speed tower and from housing of operating shaft to servo at O.S. There is also a leak of oil from the housing of the speedometer drive. The side shaft and gears have remained good;at no time has any gear worked out of position. Gear change mechanism. This has functioned quite O.K. throughout the test. At high speeds it chatters sideways in the quadrant and has caused slight wear to take place. Servo & servo gears. The servo and it's mechanism has remained in a very good condition. It has operated quite satisfactorely throughout the test. It has not been necessary to adjust the cams, and no wear is perceptible. Pedals. These are in good condition and have given no trouble. Starter motor. As previously reported, this has been erratic in action throughout the test. This has been dismantled and examined to obtain the cause of the failure. We are of opinion that too free a fit of the various parts of the Bendix drive is the cause of it binding and not engaging. Rear axle. We had previously reported that a growl had developed in the rear axle. At a mileage of 8776 approx. it became very much worse, and play was noticed in the bevel pinion housing. Upon dismantling we found that the thrust race G.50720 had become very much worn and balls badly chipped. These were replaced by new stock from Paris; and axle has been O.K. during continuation of the run. The remaining units of the axle were in good condition. | ||
