Messrs. Rolls Royce Ltd., DERBY. Dear Sirs, For the attention of Mr. Steadman Replying to your letter of the 3rd inst. we are pleased to hear that the Thermostat Unit Code X.30065 has proved satisfactory, but that you would like a further sample Thermostat having a starting temperature of 83°C. We have made up such a unit, and although it is possible we may be able to improve on the figures given below it is, nevertheless, the best we can do in the time available without making further experiments. The Thermostat we are sending you under separate cover starts to open at 83°C. and is full open with 5/16" lift at 98°C. An alteration in the valve seating will not effect the price other than a few pence; the present valve aperture diameter is 1.5/16" and we find that the rough casting is such that we could reduce to 1¼". The valve diameter should, if possible, remain as standard to avoid interfering with production. This Thermostat which we are sending you, being an experimental Thermostat, is known as Code EX.X.10225, and if put into production will have the Code X.30065/5. Yours faithfully, p.p. S.
