INTEGRATING ACCELEROMETER

DESIGN.

A sensitive integrating watt hour meter is supplied with A.C. via the accelerometer unit, arranged so that the meter operates whenever the acceleration of the part of the vehicle under test exceeds the selected value.

The accelerometer unit comprises a magnetically-suspended mass, mounted in a frame which moves with the vehicle. The mass carries contacts which control a portion of the current fed to the watt hour meter.

The acceleration at which the elements operate may be varied by adjustment of the solenoid current. A range switch is provided to increase the integrator sensitivity for short tests.

FEATURES.

A motor alternator operating from the vehicle battery is used to provide the necessary A.C. supply.

The A.C. input voltage and solenoid field current are adjustable and monitored by panel mounted meters.

The standard accelerometer unit Type TM.1468 supplied responds only to accelerations in one direction and sense. This direction is indicated by an engraved arrow. The resultant of any two directions may be obtained by arranging the accelerometer unit with the arrow pointing to a mid setting

To facilitate this adjustment, the unit is of circular form and recessed into the side of the case of the instrument so that it may be rotated and clamped at 45° intervals. It cannot be used for determinations below a horizontal inclination.

The accelerometer unit may also be used remote from the indicator section by means of an extension cable, which is normally housed in the lid{A. J. Lidsey} of the instrument.
